The Right Environment

Australian cities represent only a small proportion of the land area and the limited amount of urban and industrial development is therefore small and spread apart in comparison to most parts of the world. Australia has very high air quality with significantly lower environmental air pollution than experienced in the more densely populated areas of the world.

Australia is a dry continent and water supply is a key factor to determine the location of intensive agricultural production. The pig growing enterprises are located in intensive agriculture zones within easy reach of safe, reliable supplies of water. Water supply for pig production and processing is generally derived from local on site storage systems, usually fed from natural surface water runoff and groundwater aquifers. Major irrigation systems based on snow fed catchments and storage supply in the Snowy Mountains supply the southern irrigation areas.

The relative isolation of the Australian continent has helped to keep many of the world's pests, diseases and weeds at bay. Increasingly we are gaining a better understanding of our endemic pests, weeds and diseases and this is leading to large advances in their control without the need for agricultural chemicals.

All of these environmental attributes give Australia a natural advantage in being able to produce safe, wholesome, healthy and tasty pork.
