RAISING OF PIGS
Piggeries are managed in an agriculturally and environmentally sustainable manner, complying with government regulation and at a standard acceptable to the community.
Recent trends have seen pork production become increasingly concentrated on fewer farms while pig numbers on each farm have expanded dramatically.
Planning and environmental protection legislation governs the establishment or extension of piggeries at the local and state government levels and all piggeries must comply. Consequently there is a considerable assessment process to be completed before approval is given to allow development, expansion or alteration of existing developments, or for the re-operation of empty piggeries.
Australian pigs are raised on a balanced grain based diet in a clean, safe and natural environment. Because of this, our pork has a well deserved reputation as a high quality, premium product in both our domestic and export markets. Underpinning this achievement has been 25 years of rationalisation driven by increasing pressure to become a highly efficient industry.
The Australian industry is proud of its achievements and has a long term commitment to extending its capability and reputation as a reliable supplier of high quality product. |
